Ricky Williams is Running North

According to SI.com Ricky Williams is heading north to play in the Canadian Football League for the Toronto Argonauts.

The Miami Dolphins have given Toronto and Williams’ agent Leigh Steinberg to work out a one year deal that will free Williams from any CFL responsibilities at the end of the season in November.

Even though there is the chance that Williams could get injured playing up north and make the Dolphins front office look foolish it is still worth the risk. It was widely speculated that Miami wanted to trade their pot smoking running back before the NFL draft but Williams recent one year suspension makes him unavailable for a trade this year and leads him with no trade value at all for next season.

Playing a season in the CFL will again give Ricky some trade value and even if the Dolphins decide to keep him a season in the CFL will make him less rusty going into next season.

For Williams, playing in the CFL is an opportunity to earn some cash, something that he hasn’t done in a while. With his sudden retirement before the 2004 season, playing for the league minimum last season and then facing a one year suspension Williams is strapped for cash. Reports are that he has only made $285,000 since December 2003.
