Chiefs Missed Opportunity with Green

I wrote two weeks ago that Trent Green would be a Miami Dolphin by the end of that week. Well, obviously I was wrong but part of the reason why is because it seems that Kansas City team president Carl Peterson is about as stubborn as they come.

The Dolphins offered Kansas City a sixth round pick draft pick for Green over the weekend but Peterson balked at the offer keeping Green in a Chiefs uniform for right now.

I don’t see any scenario in which Green remains in Kansas City and now that the draft has come and gone I don’t see any way the Chiefs get anything for him. Kansas City already has a ton of money tied up in quarterbacks Damon Huard and Brody Croyle. They would owe even more to Green should he remain on the roster which would give them two quarterbacks getting “starting money.” The Chiefs would be fools to let that happen and now the only alternative is to cut him to avoid his salary.

Green had also already inked a deal with the Miami Dolphins that was contingent upon the trade going through but I’m sure can be adjusted to sign as a free agent. As to why Kansas City would turn down an offer for a guy they most likely are going to release anyway, I’m not the only one confused. You can throw Green’s agent Jim Steiner in the in the dazed and confused mix as well.

"At this point, I don't know what the Chiefs are going to get for him from the Dolphins. I don't know how they get anything," Steiner said on Sunday.

We are living in a society that places, now more than ever, a strong emphasis on the value of an education. College graduates not only receive better job offers but they also receive better credit scores along with other perks that come with the piece of paper known as a certificate of diploma.

Time and money are the two biggest factors in a person not receiving a college degree but thanks to the World Wide Web that has now changed. Many institutions offer online education but not all of them offer the quality found at Capella University.

Capella University was founded in 1993 and is an accredited fully online university. Suddenly that distance learning phd isn't that far away.

Buyer Beware!

Here’s a question. Why all the hype about Brady Quinn? I gotta tell you with the NFL draft coming up this weekend I’m not seeing it. While I do believe that there are some can’t miss players in this draft (Calvin Johnson, Adrian Peterson to name a few) I also believe that Quinn is not one of those players.

A team that selects Quinn in the top five of this year’s draft is not only going to have to pay him top pick money but top quarterback pick money. That’s a lot of money for a guy who is indecisive, has a slow release, can’t throw the deep ball consistently, and was sacked an average of 22 times a season at Notre Dame.

I guess Quinn is your man if you want a guy who can’t win a big game but can post some impressive numbers in the bench press. As long as your team doesn’t plan on suiting up against anyone better than, say, USC or winning a game bigger than a college bowl Quinn could be your man. However, if your team has bigger aspirations then you might want to take a pass on the former Irish QB.

I don’t want to come across too harsh on the guy but I wouldn’t want my team to draft him (and the Dolphins could use a young quarterback). Here’s why. Quinn should be labeled as a “big risk” guy instead of a top five guy. If he is a can’t miss pick then explain to me why he didn’t have a better college record? Explain to me why Charlie Weiss has to try to sell the kid?

Peyton Manning was a can’t miss quarterback. However, Brady Quinn reminds me more of Ryan Leaf than Peyton Manning at this point. He is what he is, a solid college quarterback who has a lot to prove in order to live up to the massive hype he as already received.

Making a bad decision with your number one pick in the draft in any other position may set you back a few games but making a bad decision at quarterback with that number one pick will set you back a few seasons.

Saturday morning an NFL franchise is going to have to answer this question and then make the right choice about their future. If it weren’t for the Notre Dame hype machine would Brady Quinn be considered as one of the draft’s top choices?

Remember in the NFL you don’t always get what you pay for.

Bring your thoughts on this post and the NFL draft into the forum.

Mariners Q&A With Lookout Landing

It may be hard to believe but at this point last week the Seattle Mariners were sitting atop the AL West division. That’s when we sent out a few questions to Jeff over at the exceptional Mariners blog Lookout Landing. Since the Mariners are our favorite team I thought it would be a great conversation about how well the season is going. Oh what a difference a week makes. Welcome aboard Jeff! Your new site logo adequately reflects this last week for all Mariners fans.

My Opinion on Sports: Are you surprised about the way Felix Hernandez is pitching right now and is there another pitcher in the league off to a better start?

Jeff: In no way am I surprised by the early season success of Felix Hernandez, and sadly, I'm also in no way surprised that he's come up with elbow trouble. The prognosis is good, but still, I think most of us have been expecting something along these lines for a while now. Anyway, when Felix is healthy, he really does have arguably the best repertoire in the league; while Santana has that killer changeup, Felix can come after you with an A-grade four-seamer, two-seamer, slider, or changeup of his own. What he did on Opening Day proved his ability to Seattle; what he did in Boston a week later proved his ability to the world. When he comes back in a week or three, he's going to resume his pursuit of the first of several Cy Youngs.

My Opinion on Sports: Adrian Beltre is hitting .233 with 10 RBI’s, Ichiro is at .290 with 8 runs scored, and Richie Sexson is batting .192 with 2 homers and 8 RBI’s. At this point who is the most dangerous bat in the lineup?

Jeff: The best bat so far has been Kenji Johjima, with Ichiro in second. Unfortunately this is sort of damning with faint praise, since outside of one or two games, the lineup has been miserable. Going forward things should get better, and Ichiro and Sexson should emerge as the top two threats, but until the group starts taking a few walks, the runs'll be coming in inconsistent spurts.

My Opinion on Sports: Who is playing better than you expected at this point?

Jeff: Aside from Johjima, nobody on the team is exceeding expectations. That's sad.

My Opinion on Sports: Who needs to step up their game?

Jeff: Um. Geez. Well, uh, I'd say that Jeff Weaver, Miguel Batista, Horacio Ramirez, Brandon Morrow, Julio Mateo, Jose Lopez, Jose Guillen, Yuniesky Betancourt, and Richie Sexson all need to step up their games. Jose Vidro should, too, but I don't know how much more "up" he can go. This current five-game losing streak has been a disaster that's exposed every little weak spot on the roster, and - surprise - there are a bunch of them.

My Opinion on Sports: Tell us what was going through your mind when Hernandez upstaged DiceK on Wednesday night.

Jeff: Instead of going on and on for paragraphs about how incredible that game was, I'll just link you to this: Magical

In short, being in Fenway that night was the most unbelievable, amazing live baseball experience of my life. And I wouldn't be surprised if it stays that way until I die.

My Opinion on Sports: Finally, at this early point in the season who poses the biggest threat to the M’s right now in the AL West?

Jeff: The biggest threat to the Mariners in the AL West is, um, the competition. I can't really point to any particular team since they're probably all at least a little better than the Mariners are. I guess the Angels could be the best of the bunch, but all the teams are pretty bad, and have a handful of glaring weaknesses. It really wouldn't take that much for the M's to pull away and take first place. Unfortunately, the obnoxiously intelligent part of my brain says they don't have it in them.

Thanks for your time Jeff. It’s been great having you on board and good luck the rest of the season!

Last Chance to Sign Up for NBA PlayOffs Contest

The contest begins today at tip-off of the first game. All picks must be posted by then.

Here’s how it works! You pick the winners of each series and how many games you think that series will go. For each winner correctly picked you’ll earn 70 points but for each game you are off on the total number of series games you will lose 10 points.

So if you picked the Pistons to beat the Magic in six games and they win in five you would earn 60 points for that series. The contest will go on through the NBA Finals with points carrying over to the next round.

What do you get? Well, that’s a legitimate question. You get dinner on me if you win the contest. I’ll send you a $25.00 gift card to a restaurant of your choice from our list.

Where do I sign up? The entire contest will be run through the forum. If you are not already registered there you’ll need to, obviously. It’s free and only takes a minute!

Dangerous Sports – Figure Skating

I have to admit, I don’t watch figure skating. In fact I really don’t have a desire to watch anything on ice including Will Ferrell’s new movie Blades of Glory. However, after watching this video has changed my mind. I never really thought about how painful a fall looks when you fall face first skating full speed.

Ricky Williams to the St. Louis Rams?

The Miami Dolphins could finally be taking my advice, only about a year too late. After walking out on the team before the 2004 season Williams returned, and faced a four game suspension, for Miami’s 2005 season. It was at this point that I suggested that the Dolphins trade Williams for whatever they could get out of him.

Did they listen to me? Of course not! Williams hung around and received a one year ban from the league for yet another substance abuse violation. Essentially he walked out on his team for the second time in three seasons.

In Williams the Dolphins don’t just have damaged goods they have possibly permanently damaged goods. Williams is one failed drug test away from a life-time ban making him more of a liability than ever before.

Now, in steps Scott Linehan and the St. Louis Rams who could be willing to offer the Dolphins something for nothing. Linehan, who was Miami’s offensive coordinator in 2005, said that the Rams would be interested in acquiring Williams as a backup to Stephen Jackson.

The Rams probably wouldn’t be willing to offer anything better than a fifth or sixth round draft pick for him but at least the Dolphins can count on a draft pick!

OKC Keeping An Eye On Sonics

The Seattle SuperSonics ended their season Wednesday night with a 31 point loss to the Dallas Mavericks and could have very well ended a forty year stretch of NBA basketball in Seattle, Washington.

On Monday legislative leaders, in the state of Washington, decided not to consider the plan for a new arena in suburban Renton during the regular session, which is due to end by this coming Sunday, saying it lacks enough support to pass.

Washington Governor is not willing to call lawmakers into special session so the team can continue to push for taxpayer money for a new $500 million arena. It appears that no one really cares about basketball in Seattle anymore, not even the fans. A “save the Sonics” rally was held this week in Seattle and only about 50 fans showed up to voice their support.

It’s an obvious truth, the Sonics are done in Seattle and now the question is not only where they are moving to but when? The obvious choice as to where they move to would be Oklahoma City. Team majority owner Clay Bennett is not only from Oklahoma City but he also has expressed an interest in getting an NBA franchise to the Sooner state. He was instrumental in getting the New Orleans Hornets to Oklahoma City where the city showed that it was ready to step into the big leagues of professional sports on a full-time basis.

As far as when the Sonics will be moving, don’t count on them being in Seattle for the 2007-08 basketball season. Bennett has been vocal about his disappointment over the lack of interest in funding a new arena deal in the Seattle area. He wasn’t even present for the season’s final game Wednesday night. Instead he is in New York “soliciting private funds for his new arena” which is actually code for meeting with the NBA’s Board of Governors Thursday and Friday about getting his team out of Seattle as quickly as possible.

The question is the board to answer is why leave a “lame duck” team in Seattle one last season for them to die when you can give them immediate new life in Oklahoma City with an announcement that they are allowing Bennett to move his team even though he didn’t fill out the relocation paper work by the March 1 deadline.

Even before the decision to move there are some other significant decisions for the Sonics to make. The decision to retain head coach Bob Hill and general manager Rick Sund or to cut them loose could be made as early as this weekend. The decision as to what will happen with Rashard Lewis could be made soon as well. Then there is the NBA draft in June.

Seattle may have given up on the Sonics but fans in Oklahoma City are taking notice and paying close attention.

That’s Right, I Said First Place Mariners

Don’t look now but the official Major League Baseball team of My Opinion on Sports is sitting at the top of the AL West standings. OK on second thought do look because we don’t know how long it will last but are loving it right now.

Going into tonight’s game against the Minnesota Twins the Mariners have a game and a half lead on both the Angels and A’s and two games on the Rangers.

The Mariners top spot is due to Adrian Beltre’s 10 RBI’s, Ichiro’s .290 batting average, total dominance by Felix Hernandez, and some help from Mother Nature. The realists in me wants to admit that this lead won’t last but the fan in me wants it to go on forever.

Trent Green Will Be A Miami Dolphin!

A deal between the Miami Dolphins and the Kansas City Chiefs will happen this week that will send Trent Green to Miami in exchange for a 5th or 6th round draft pick. The two teams had a deal worked out earlier but the Chiefs pulled back in an attempt to try to get a better draft pick. The problem was lack of interest around the league for Green’s services and after the Detroit Lions pulled out of the Green sweepstakes last week both Miami and Kansas City became anxious to work out a deal before the draft.

The trade for Green will also end what has been a disappointing stint in Miami for Daunte Culpepper. Culpepper has been unhealthy since arriving in Miami but will gain huge interest from both the Oakland Raiders and the Cleveland Browns after being set free by the Dolphins.

Culpepper moving could also create ripples in the NFL Draft by causing Brady Quinn and JaMarcus Russel’s stock to drop and Adrian Peterson’s to rise.

Global Warming Doesn’t Apply to Cleveland

Where ever Al Gore is right now he needs to drop whatever it is and head to Cleveland because the Inconvenient Truth is that the Indians can’t play baseball because of snow storms in April.

Cleveland had seven attempts at playing baseball against the Seattle Mariners snowed out between April 6th and the 9th. Today they are beginning a three game series where they will be hosting the LA Angels at Miller Park in Milwaukee.

Never has the global warming myth failing to rear its ugly head hurt Cleveland worse than it did over the weekend. Not only did the fans have to suffer through seven consecutive postponements but the season ticket holders have now also lost the Angels series to a National League park in Wisconsin.

The biggest blow dealt by Mother Nature came on Friday night when the Indians were shutting out the Mariners with one out away from the game being called official and the umpire decided to call it thus snatching a game out of the win column for the Tribe.

Global warming? They don’t want to talk about it in Cleveland.

Mariners Off to a Good Start

Just in case you weren’t aware, the Seattle Mariners are the official baseball team of My Opinion on Sports. They are also off to good start not a great one but a good start. A great start would have been a sweep of the Oakland Athletics but as it is the Mariners took 2 of 3 games in the series.

After the first series of the season Ichiro leads the team with a .400 batting average while Richie Sexon leads in home runs (2) RBI’s (5) and runs (2). Seattle is a half game back from the 3-0 Angels.

The thing that bothered me in this series was Wednesday’s loss. Not the fact that they lost but that they failed to produce any offense, something that plagued them last season. Hopefully that’s a trend that won’t continue as the Mariners head to Cleveland for a four games series with the currently undefeated Indians.

Ricky Williams Applying for Reinstatement, Again

Ricky Williams is all set to make yet another comeback. After being forced out of the NFL for a full year Tricky Ricky is ready to run over the Buffalo Bills once more. Sure, he has his critics and who wouldn’t with his track record? Miami Dolphin fans don’t know how long he’ll be around this time nor do his teammates. He literally could go from a 150 yard rushing performance one week to sitting on his couch watching the games on DirecTV the next.

Its not that Ricky is injury prone (which is the main reason NFL players make a comeback) nor has he been in trouble with the law. Ricky’s only problem is that he has a tendency to choose smoking pot over being a teammate.

Although he contends that he doesn’t have an addiction to marijuana he is only one more strike away from receiving a lifetime ban from the NFL. He has sacrificed NFC stardom, rushing titles and a Hall of Fame career for smoking pot but according to Ricky that’s not an addiction that’s choosing to take control of your life.

As a Miami Dolphins fan I’ll cheer for the team and yes that means when Williams carries the ball I’ll be hoping that he does well as will his teammates. The thing is that we’ll be hoping that he’s there to do it every week.

Case of the Ugly’s

There is ugly and then there is UGLY! The latter would describe my NCAA tournament bracket of which I incorrectly picked 22 out of 60 possible winners. I tried to hang my hat of the fact that I actually did correctly pick the Final Four but my championship game was UCLA over Georgetown so I don’t even have anything on the line tonight.

My bracket was not only Greg Oden ugly it was Joakim Noah ugly. In fact it may even have been uglier! I retract my previous statement of being the Final Four expert. Turns out that I am only an expert in the ugliness of NCAA bracketology.

So as the expert of ugly I pick the Florida Gators to once again beat the Ohio State Buckeyes in a championship game, 67-54.

We’ve had our fun with Barry Bonds over the past couple of years but in actuality drug addiction, be it steroids or heroin, and the effects of drug use on the human body is no laughing matter.

The reason why so many people fall back into their addictions is because toxins from long periods of drug abuse can remain stored in fatty tissue for years. Thus the need for complete drug detox.

Stone Hawk offers the "Narconon New Life Detoxification Program" that uses dry, saunas, proper diet, exercise and Vitamin B to safely and effectively detoxify the body of these materials. They have an amazing track record of success.
