Who Struck Out and Who Went Deep at the Deadline?

The MLB trading deadline has come and gone and while some teams made great moves to either get back into contention or to hold on through the stretch there were others who struck out looking.

Going Deep
Boston Red Sox – Boston got what they needed to keep the Yankees at arms length down the home stretch. Sure they could have used Jermaine Dye but what they needed was a setup man and Eric Gagne will fill that role splendidly.

How Much Trouble Is Michael Vick In?

Maybe a better question is, how much trouble will the Atlanta Falcons be in without their star quarterback. Michael Vick’s 2007 football season will not happen and there is a very real possibility that he’ll be trading his number 7 Atlanta Falcons jersey for a prison uniform.

Breaking Out The Bats

Call it a crazy Sunday, call it an exception, or just call it bad pitching. Call it what ever you want to but the Major League Baseball scores from Sunday looked a lot like NFL football scores. Six games on Sunday featured teams that scored 10 or more runs and in two of them it was both teams banging the ball around the park.

The Houston Astros scored eleven runs during the 3rd, 4th, and 5th innings but it wasn’t enough to catch up with the San Diego Padres who scored 12 runs in the first two innings on their way to an 18 run performance in a game that would see a combined seven homeruns.

Contenders and Pretenders – American League

With the major league baseball season sitting at the mid-season All Star break it’s the perfect opportunity to look at the top half of the division standings and see who is for real and who is impersonating a contender.

AL East
Boston Red Sox
Contender – The Red Sox have a comfortable 10 game lead over the Blue Jays and Yankees and also boast what is potentially the best lineup in the bigs. Avoiding the injury bug over the last half of the season will be the key to Boston not falling apart.

Key Players
Kevin Youkilis .328 batting average
Mike Lowell 63 RBI
David Ortiz 14 HR
Josh Beckett 12-2
Jonathan Papelbon 20 saves

Jamie McMurray Wins at Daytona : Who's that, you ask ???

Its like a phoenix rising from the ashes. Its like the Boston Celtics winning the NBA Championship again, maybe its rarer than that !!!

Jamie McMurray who almost faded into oblivion, having gone a whopping 166 races without a win, finally managed to eke out a win at the Daytona International Speedway on Saturday. Maybe 7 is his lucky number, but the date 07/07/07 did something for him that 166 previous attempts couldnt and he finally came out trumps, beating Kyle Busch by a bumper to the finish line.

The last seconds of the race: McMurray ahead by a bumper's length.

Eight in a Row, Hargrove Says No Mo

June was a month of milestones and records and July started off in the same fashion with only a slighter different twist. The Seattle Mariners current eight game winning streak is their longest since 2003. People in Seattle are abuzz about the possibilities of making the play-off via Wild Card or even possibly winning the division. Meanwhile their manager announced Sunday that he was going to do something that hadn't been done since 1900.

Sitting 12 games above .500 and very much in competition with the Angels to win the American League West division Seattle’s manager Mile Hargrove dropped a bombshell on the team and the city when he announced that Sunday night’s game against Toronto would be his last as the Mariners’ manager.
