The Value of Good Credit

I’ll be honest with you. I, like many Americans, made some serious financial mistakes early in life that are now costing me. I made the mistake of thinking that I could make purchases on the credit card and make payments later. Well, it’s later and I’m still making payments!

While I’ve made significant strides at eliminating credit card debt I still have a little ways to go. Pile that on top of a car payment, mortgage payment, groceries and utilities and you can quickly realize what else you could be doing with that money that is going to the credit cards.

The important thing is that while I do have debt I’ve also got good credit, thanks to making payments on time and retiring some of my debt. Should the need for Emergency Loans at least I’m comforted by the fact of knowing that I’ve got the security of good credit. By that I mean that I could actually secure a loan if needed.

Understanding your credit score and how to improve on it is vital knowledge. You can do a lot with good credit but you’ll be in need a lot with bad credit. Make sure your payments are made on time and do your best to eliminate as much debt as possible because you’ll never know when you’ll need to accrue more.

NFL Week Four Preview

After today’s games the NFL season will be a fourth of the way over. While there’s still a lot of football left to be played there are some teams who may need to make personnel changes should they continue to lose and some coaches fates may have already been settled.

Week Four Rundown

Houston @ Atlanta – Two third place teams in their respective division but the Texans are a game above .500 at 2-1 while the Falcons are looking for their first win of the season. I’ll take the Texans to move to 3-1.

BlogPoll Ballot #6

Perhaps we saw a team drop away from the leader pack this weekend with Florida’s struggle against Mississippi Saturday. Or perhaps the Gators were just having a bad day but regardless I dropped them a spot and moved Oklahoma ahead of them.

New to my top 10 this week, almost by default, is Texas at #10. Sure, the Longhorns have had their struggles but if you look at the three teams behind them only Oregon has a legitimate complaint for being left out.

Furniture Shop from Home

Looking for a new credenza desk? How about a bed, couch, or dining set? Furniture From Home has a new website that allows you to do your complete furniture shopping from the comfort of your own home. Avoid the traffic, avoid the crowds and avoid the pesky sales people. Take your time and shop in leisure, as quickly or as you would like or take all the time that you may need.

The new site allows you to shop for new furniture by room, style or even colors. Use their zoom feature to get a closer look at their merchandise by simply clocking on the desired photo and then select your desired options from there.

Let’s say that you are looking for some dining room furniture. Choose from one of their almost two hundred selections under that category by just clicking on the photo. A price list and options menu will then appear and the rest is self explanatory.

Another great thing about the site is that they offer free delivery so there are now additional costs added to your order. So you’re new living room furniture could be in your home in one to eight weeks from the time you order.

Why The Yankees Need To Win The East

Playoffs? No problem. First round? Big problem. The Yankees, barring nuclear fallout, are going to the playoffs. As of now they have a 5 game lead in the wild card over the defending American League champion Detroit Tigers and 2 behind Boston in the East.

According to playoff rules, the wild card team plays the team with the best record in the league. If Boston holds off and is the top team in the AL, then the Yankees, if they win the wild card, cannot play Boston in the first round as two teams from the same division cannot face each other in the Division Series.

A-Rod Could Own the Cubs

New York Magazine reported on Sunday that Alex Rodriguez could strike a deal next year that could land him with the Chicago Cubs, literally, as in a partial owner.

Rodriguez, who could opt out of the $252 million contract he signed with the Texas Rangers at the end of this season. The New York Yankees are he hoping that he doesn’t because, as their third baseman, he is hitting .313 with 146 RBIs and 52 HR. The Texas Rangers are hoping that he does because they are still paying on that contract even though A-Rod is long gone from Arlington.

College Football Week Four Preview

Thank goodness for Thursday night football. While most of the games are dog ugly it wets our appetite again after a two day football absence following Monday night. Tonight’s game, Texas A&M at Miami, is worth watching because there is a good chance that the Aggies could be “upset” in South Florida by a Miami team who won’t be as good as they’ll be labeled if they do win. Here are two good reasons to watch tonight. Miami is horrible on offense and the Aggies stink on defense. The Hurricanes are good on defense and the Aggies are good on offense. Combine those two with a short preparation week and you have the makings of a very interesting game!

Here are a few other things to keep an eye on this weekend!

Game of the Week: Kentucky at Arkansas – Two very good offenses and two very mediocre defenses will definitely make this a game worth watching!

Everyone knows the hype surrounding Darren McFadden as one of the best running backs in the country and he has lived up to every bit of it by averaging 173 yards rushing and scoring 3 touchdowns in two games. However Kentucky quarterback Andre' Woodson has been flying under the radar as possibly the best quarterback in the country. In the first three games of the season he has passed for an average of 247.7 yards per game while also tossing 9 touchdowns to 0 interceptions.

Here are the most telling stats though. The Razorbacks and Wildcats are giving up 413 and 374 yards per game respectively. Should be fun!

Blog Poll Still Differs From AP – My Defense of Nebraska

The latest version of the BlogPoll released today and the bloggers still show that they have better insight to the world of college football than the AP voters. Our #1 spot goes to LSU rather than USC (by a narrow margin) based on the simple logic that the Baton Rouge Boys have been the most impressive team in the country so far.

Collectively the bloggers have taken note that the Texas Longhorns and Wisconsin Badgers have been playing like dogs and not like top tier teams. For that reason the bloggers put them at #9 and #12 respectively instead of #7 and #9 in the AP.

On the same note we have noticed the lightening in a bottle starts of Oregon and Boston College and rank them #10 and #13, respectively, rather than the #11 and #14 rankings of the AP.

Another team we take issue on is the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors. While wanting to give them their due as a team deserving of being ranked we aren’t anxious to anoint them as the next Boise State just yet. Therefore we place them at #24 this week which is five spots behind their #24 AP ranking.

BlogPoll Roundtable: Storylines Emerge

This week's roundtable is being hosted at Burnt Orange Nation. Here are my responses to the questions presented but you'll want to make sure to head over to B.O.N. for links to responses from around the nation.

1. Handicap your team's chances to win your conference championship. If your team is not the favorite, who is?

I think at this point, after three games, that the Sooners are the frontrunners for the Big 12 Championship. Nebraska was exposed to be a fraud on Saturday night against USC. Despite what the national media was saying and the people in Lincoln were thinking, Bill Callahan does not have that team ready to play among college football’s elite. To win the Big 12 you have to be playing at that level. Missouri also looms in the north and while they have the ability to score quickly their defense will cost them severely this season.

In the south it is still a two horse race between the Sooners and Longhorns and while appearances can be deceiving OU looks light years ahead of Texas at this point. Everything hinges on October 6th when the Sooners and Longhorns face each other in the Cotton Bowl.

2. Outline the (realistic) best case and worst case scenarios for your team.

Realistically the Sooners have a chance to be playing in New Orleans for the BCS National Championship! Four teams have separated themselves from the college football pack (OU, LSU, USC, Florida) and it will be very interesting to see how it all plays out.

On the flip side OU could suffer through a rash of injuries down the stretch like Texas did last season and find themselves playing in the Cotton or Alamo Bowl.

3. We're only three games in to the season, but teams and storylines are starting to take shape. Compare your team to a character or theme from a fable or children's tale.

I hate questions like this! I don’t know which character the Sooners would play on Charlie Brown or in Jack and the Bean Stalk. Based on the way the Big 12 played over the past weekend we’ll make up our own fable and call it, “OU and the 11 dwarfs.”

4. Imagine you're the coach of your team. Give three specific changes you'd implement immediately which you think would have the biggest impact on improving the team.

First, I would leave the defense alone except for one thing, the underneath passing lanes. Miami and Utah State both had limited success passing underneath against the Sooners. You won’t beat Oklahoma by consistently passing deep but it appears that a team might have some success using underneath passes.

Second, I would put DeMarco Murray and Allen Patrick on the field at the same time more often. I think we’ll actually see this when conference play starts because there are so many offensive possibilities and so many possible defensive headaches under that scheme.

Third I would have the holder and deep snapper workout whatever kink it is that has caused them to mess up two weeks in a row resulting in a failed PAT.

5. USC, LSU/Florida, and Oklahoma have established themselves as the frontrunners in the early going. Which other team or teams are you eyeballing as potential BCS party crashers?
I think that there are two teams who still have a chance to crash the BCS party. West Virginia could run the table in the Big East. They can’t play defense but they really don’t need to be in a game with their offense.

Texas is the other school who has a chance. This team will either implode or explode! They are too talented to be struggling against the likes of Arkansas State and Central Florida but the team may have some serious character issues as well causing disunity. If they pull together to beat Oklahoma then the BCS championship becomes a very real possibility.

OJ Finally in Jail

After escaping murder charges and a few other minor assault charges it was an armed robbery charge that landed the former Heisman trophy winner behind bars without bail. No, OJ didn’t knock off a band or the corner convenience store. Rather he and a few other men stormed into a Las Vegas hotel room and “reclaimed” some sports memorabilia at gunpoint.

According sports collector Bruce Fromong, who was in the hotel room, OJ and his crew literally came crashing in.

"The door burst open and they came in almost commando style, O.J. Simpson and some of his people, I guess you would call it, with gunsdrawn," Fromong told ABC's "Good Morning America" Monday. "O.J. at that time was saying, 'I want my stuff. I want my stuff.'

"The thing in my mind as soon as I saw him, I'm thinking, 'O.J., how can you be this dumb? You're in enough trouble."'

No one ever accused OJ to be a man of genius but this could take the cake when it comes to the incredibly stupid things a person of “celebrity” status can do.

College Football Week Three Preview

College Football’s third weekend kicks off tonight with #4 West Virginia traveling to Maryland and TCU visiting Air Force and tomorrow night the Oklahoma State Cowboys travel to Troy but its still Saturday that we long for. Here’s a quick glimpse of what to look forward to and expect.

Game of the Week: Ohio State @ Washington - The consensus is to go with USC/Nebraska but I don’t really see this being much of a game. I could be wrong and hope that I am but I just don’t see the Huskers being on the same level as the Trojans yet.

Instead I’m turning my attention to the Big 10 where this could be a shakeup year for the conference. The talent level has increased at Washington and while they haven’t yet ascended to the level of an Ohio State they are good enough that visiting teams should take notice because they are in for a dogfight.

BlogPoll Week 4

The latest version of the BlogPoll is out I have to say that we are quite different from the AP and the “Good ole Boy” system known as the coaches poll. With the 61 voters taking the what have you done for me lately approach the USC Trojans, ranked #1 in both the AP and Coaches Poll check in at #3 with the bloggers.

Other teams of note are the Oregon Ducks who are ranked #19 in the AP but are #14 with the bloggers. Washington and South Florida check in at #22 and #21 respectively in the BlogPoll but aren’t even ranked in the AP. Virginia Tech, after an inept offensive showing for the second week in a row, rounds out the BlogPoll at #25 but are seven places higher at #18 in the AP.

Blog Poll Ballot #4

After two weeks of college football competition the top 5 picture is becoming clearer. Actually I would say top four because I believe that we’ve got USC, LSU, Florida, Oklahoma and then the rest of the country.

Obviously there are a few other teams out there who could get into the mix if it weren’t for a porous defense. Teams like West Virginia, Louisville and Cal all have the offensive firepower to beat any team in the country but it just doesn’t appear that they have the top notch defenses to play for the BCS title.

Buster's Best

Last Week’s Picks
Buster:
4-1
Dad: 3-2

Alright I quit picking against the point spread in hopes of trying to not get beat so much by my 11 year old son and he beats me anyway. Because we focused solely on college football last week we devote this week solely to the National Football League.

This Week’s Picks

Miami Dolphins vs. Washington Redskins – It’s a brand new season and anything is possible including a Miami win in the season opener. I’m picking (with my heart) the Dolphins to win while Buster is going with the Redskins.

NY Giants vs. Dallas Cowboys – Who knows what to expect from either of these teams? Dallas is already struggling with injuries and the Giants are a big question mark. Buster and I’ll both take the home team Cowboys.

Chicago Bears vs. San Diego Chargers – The AFC is just so much better than the NFC! Indianapolis proved that Thursday night and I believe the Chargers will continue the trend today. Buster likes the Bears to win.

Baltimore Ravens vs. Cincinnati Bengals – Just another of the great week one match-ups! Buster and I agree that the Ravens defense will be too much for the Bengals.

Arizona Cardinals vs. San Francisco 49ers – Both teams are supposedly on the rise but I think the 49ers are ahead of the Arizona curve. Give me San Francisco while Buster likes the Cardinals.

Irish to Feed Clausen to the Lion’s

College football’s first weekend opened America’s eyes to some harsh realizations. Among them is the fact that Notre Dame is a bad football team! Offensively the Irish tried three quarterbacks who combined for 130 passing yards and three points against Georgia Tech prompting head coach Charlie Weis to name true freshman Jimmy Clausen the starting quarterback for this Saturday’s game at Penn State.

This is the right move for Notre Dane for the long term because nothing is really going to help them in the short term.

BlogPoll Ballot #3

First off, I didn’t vote in the poll’s second week because there had been no games and I really had no idea as to how I would change anything without actually seeing the teams play. Your Political Voice

As 2007 heads into the final months and the weather turns cold political campaigns are going to start heating up. There are so many candidates out there and so many issues to be discussed before Americans make the critical decision of who to vote for that it would be great if people could gather in one place to discuss it all. What would be even better would be if you and I could join that discussion from the comforts of our own home or office.

I came across the 2008 Presidential Election Forum this week that allows you to read opinions and facts on each candidate as well as state your own opinions in discussions and debates. Right now there are over sixteen republican and democratic presidential candidates for Americans to do research on in order to make an informed decision. Currently on the forum there are sixteen conversations going on in the forum making it a great place to start.

However this forum is about more than just candidates. Americans want their voices to be heard and their opinions read on topics such as abortion, the environment, same-sex marriage and much more. What better place to do it than a place where people will reply back?

Game Threads

College football's second weekend is just a few days away and we want to know which games you are most looking forward to. As you prepare for the weekend action stop by the forum and let us know who you'll be watching and who is going to win.You don't have to wait until game day to participate in an existing game thread or to start your own! There’s great match-ups coming up so let's get some great conversations going about them.

BlogPoll Round Table #2

I took the first round table off because until the season actually started I didn’t have anything constructive to say. Now that we’ve moved beyond college football’s kick-off there’s plenty to talk about.

This week’s round table is being hosted at hey jenny slater and while I have absolutely no idea who Jenny Slater is the questions make for great conversation. You’ll definitely want to head over there to read how other college football bloggers are responding.

1. By the end of the season, some previously unheralded teams' bandwagons will be so full they'll be having to bump passengers and offer them free vouchers and first-class upgrades; others will have emptied out in a big way. On whose bandwagon are you already scrambling to save a seat? Conversely, which team's bandwagon is being driven by Toonces the Driving Cat, prompting you to leap off now before it careens over a cliff to its fiery death below?

Opening week games can tell you a lot about a team. Most of the major conferences schedule sub par teams in order to see what they look like hitting someone other than their own scrubs. You have those teams who fall flat on their face (Michigan), teams that strike panic and fear in the hearts of their fans causing many sleepless nights (Texas), and then the teams who prove that yes they could actually name their score.

It’s the teams that show that they have the ability to score what they want that you want to take notice of. The reason being is that this is Division I football that we are talking about and posting Play Station like numbers in offensive yards and in points proves two things about the team.

1. They are talented! superior athletes are exactly that, superior! When teams score at will on the opposition they not only show that they just have superior athletes but that they have them at every position. That is what makes them a dangerous football team.

2. They are prepared! Never underestimate the power of being prepared. When a lesser team is able to hang around with a top tier team or even upset them it is mostly because of lack of preparation.

For these reasons I’m jumping on the Hawaii bandwagon! Not only are the Warriors deeply talented they are also well coached and prepared. Coming from the same conference that gave us BCS Buster Boise State last season look for Hawaii to do the same this season.

When it comes to jumping off a bandwagon Michigan is going to be the people’s choice but I was never on that wagon so I can’t jump off. Instead I’m bailing from the Auburn bandwagon. The Tigers had to pull off some fourth quarter magic to separate themselves from Kansas State and anyone who knows anything about Big 12 North football will tell you that doesn’t bode well for the Tigers future.

2. What do you think was opening weekend's biggest mirage -- either a "big win" over a team that isn't really as good as everyone thinks, or an embarrassing loss (or embarrassingly close win) that won't seem quite as embarrassing by season's end?

I think that people are making too much of the narrow victory for the Texas Longhorns over Arkansas State. We knew going into the season that the Longhorn defense would be down this year but it was the sloppy play of the offense that has people worried. Decent coaching (I’ll never accuse Mack Brown of being anything more than just a decent coach) can fix sloppy play and that is what I expect to see happen in Austin. The Longhorns will still be a player in the Big 12!

3. Compared to how you felt Friday night, how do you feel now about your team's chances this season? I'm not just talking about your impressions of your own team -- also take into account their prospects relative to this year's opponents, whom you've also gotten a little more acquainted with after this past weekend's action.

Walking out of the stadium Saturday night I felt ecstatic about the possibilities for Oklahoma this season. After the first game is way too soon to begin talking BCS Championship for any team but as far as the conference goes I feel like right now the Big 12 belongs to the Sooners.

There are some good offenses out there in the conference but I don’t know that there is a defense out there who can stop OU’s offense.

4. Looking at how those future opponents performed this past weekend, which developments are you most excited about? Which of your opponents' performances have you a little worried?

Nothing in the Big 12 South caught me off guard except for the 79 points that OU put up against North Texas. Oklahoma State showed that they still aren’t ready for the big time by getting handled by Georgia. Texas struggled against Arkansas State and Texas A&M actually trailed Montana State at one point.

I think that I may have underestimated Nebraska a little. The only way that the Huskers and Sooners would mix it up this season would be in the Big 12 Championship game but if they did it looks like a stronger Nebraska team.

5. There are now 32 bowls in D-IA football, meaning 64 bowl teams, meaning any given team now stands a better-then-50-percent chance of going to a bowl. To get that number under 50 percent, we'd have to eliminate three bowls. Which ones would you get rid of?

The New Orleans Bowl – Any bowl game with an automatic tie in to the Sunbelt Conference is doomed anyway.

The Humanitarian Bowl – The main attraction to this game is Smurf Turf and that’s it. It’s played in the middle of nowhere and the weather is always horrible.

The Rose Bowl – Yeah, that’s right I said Rose Bowl, the “Granddaddy of them all.” Here’s the problem with the Rose Bowl. They don’t want to play with anyone else! They don’t like the BCS system but want the BCS money and they don’t want any other teams other than the Big 10 or Pac 10 playing. Well, I say let’s let them have it! The game only sells out when it’s a Big 10/Pac 10 match-up and even then people seem to be more interested in the events leading up to the game instead of the game itself.

Here’s what needs to happen. The Big 10 and the Pac 10 need to combine to form a super conference, keeping each conference intact as a division, and play their conference championship game in Pasadena. Then Cotton Bowl could move to Jerry World in Arlington, Texas and jump into the BCS mix.

6. And finally, in 50 words or less, how happy are you that it's finally football season again?

Too excited! So much so that I got very little work done last week and drove my family completely nuts Friday night and Saturday morning.

Week One Report

The first weekend of college football didn’t disappoint in upsets, blowouts and drama plus we still have the Bowden Bowl to deal with. Sure there are better days to come with more rivals and top 25 match ups but it’ll be a long, long time before we have another opening weekend like this one.

Stock Market Report

College football teams are like stocks on the market moving up and down or holding steady each week based on performance.

Teams Moving Up

Nebraska – The Huskers played a weaker and slower Nevada team but they did post a 52-10 win proving that they’ll be able to make a move for the Big 12 North title again. The best news for the Huskers was that their defense only gave up 3 points.

Hawaii – The Rainbow Warriors exploded with 63 points against Northern Colorado but the biggest thing on the islands right now is Colt Brennan who has a chance to lead his team to a BCS bowl game.

Oklahoma – All of Oklahoma’s questions were around the quarterback position. By halftime Sam Bradford had 350 yards passing with 3 touchdowns and all the questions answered.

Check out the teams holding steady and the teams who dropped following week 1 as well as my Top 10.

Buster’s Best

I know college football games began Thursday night but its not official to me until I get to see ESPN Game Day, the Oklahoma Sooners play and, oh yeah, Buster makes his picks.

Because I’m tired of always losing to a kid who is now 11 and not wanting to take the time to explain point spreads to him we’ll both just be picking games straight up this season. Yes, I do realize that means that I’m stooping to a 6th graders level.

Here we go with our game selections this week.

North Texas/OU – The Sooners are 6-0 against the Mean Green and have scored exactly 37 points the last three times they have played them. Buster and I are agreed that there is no way that the Sooners lose this one.

Oklahoma State/Georgia – Give the Cowboys credit for actually stepping up the level of competition right out of the gate. Unfortunately they’ll start the season 0-1.

Tennessee/California – It’s a match up between the nation’s top conference and one of the most overrated conference’s in the country. Could this game tell us which is which?

Buster: Cal – Dad: Tenn

Florida State/Clemson – Bowden Bowl! Forget the point spread. What are the odds of both coaches being out of a job at the end of the season?

Colorado State/Colorado – Colorado was absolutely awful last season but then again Colorado State wasn’t much better. This could be an ugly game.
