OU started the weekend by losing to the host team, Rice, 8-2 but followed that up by beating Lamar and nationally ranked Long Beach State.
The Sooners 11-4 victory over Lamar was a revenge game pending from Oklahoma’s loss to them earlier this month in the UTPA tournament.
Newcomer Joseph Hughes made his first career start (in center field) for the Sooners and led the offense with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate, including four RBI and a run scored. Hughes is the third Sooner this season to record a four-RBI game (Ryan Mottern and Chuckie Caufield).
The 2-1 victory Sunday over Long Beach State was the Sooners first ever against the 19th ranked team. The Sooners are 1-2 lifetime against LBSU after falling in the 1997 South Regional and 1989 West Regional.
“This is a big win because it’s early in the season and Long Beach State is a top 25 program,” said OU head coach Sunny Golloway, who is 7-2 in his first full season at OU and 19-8 at the Sooners’ helm. “Long Beach swept USC early in the season and beat Rice yesterday, so they had set themselves up to move up in next week’s poll.”
