Buster's Best

Buster’s best is expanding and changing this season. First, it is changing because I am making Buster pick against the point spreads this season. He killed me going straight up and me picking the spread last season so I had to make changes.

It is expanding because Buster’s younger sister and brother want in on the action. They are going to get to pick the games straight up because they are first timers into this little family contest.

Because I don’t post my kids names on the internet we are using their nicknames instead. Boo is my daughter she is 7 and Mavin is our youngest son, he is 6.

We’ll pick games all season and see who has the best record at the end.

This Week’s Games

UAB at Oklahoma – The Sooners are 22 point favorites. Buster is picking Oklahoma to cover the 22 and I am as well.

North Texas at Texas – The Longhorns are favored by 41 over the Mean Green. I think that’s too many points to give a freshman led offensive attack. If the Longhorns cover it will be because the defense is scoring points as well. I’m taking North Texas and the points and so is Buster.

Louisiana Tech at Nebraska – The Huskers are favored by 22. For the last couple of years Nebraska has been bad against the spread early in the season. Buster thinks the Huskers will cover and I’m not so sure. I’ll take La. Tech and the points.

SMU at Texas Tech – The Red Raiders are favored by 26.5 and are breaking in freshman quarterback also. Buster is taking the Mustangs and the points and I am going to pick the Red Raiders to cover.

Notre Dame at Georgia Tech – The Yellow Jackets are 6.5 point underdogs to the Irish. I think Georgia Tech has a really good chance to win but am afrais to call the upset. I’ll take Notre Dame to cover and so does Buster.

Boo Boo's Best: OU-UAB Boo Boo picks OU. Texas - North Texas Boo Boo pickes Texas. Nebraska - Louisiana Tech Boo Boo pickes Nabraska. Texas Tech - SMU Boo Boo pickes Texas Tech. Georgia Tech - Notre Dame Boo Boo pickes Notre Dame.

Mavins Best: OU - UAB Mavin picks OU. Texas - North Texas Mavin pickes North Texas. Nebraska - Louisiana Tech Mavin pickes Louisiana Tech. Texas Tech - SMU Mavin pickes Texas Tech. Georgia Tech - Notre Dame Mavin pickes Notre Dame.

NCAA Kicking Record in Jeopardy

Colorado Head Coach Dan Hawkins referred to his kicker Mason Crosby as a “freak” because of his ability to consistently make long field goals.

Over the past two seasons, Crosby has made 11 field goals longer than 50 yards, the highest total in the nation over that span. Last fall he tied for the longest field of the season with a 60 yarder.

"People sometimes discount (a kicker), but Mason is an absolute freak," Colorado coach Dan Hawkins said. "I'd like to get a mike out there and record some of his kicks, because you've never heard a ball squeal like it does when he kicks it."

But how does Coach Hawkins feel about giving Crosby a chance at breaking the NCAA record of 67 yards?

"Obviously, the team comes first and we want to win the game," Hawkins said. "But you also want a kid to have a chance to put his name in a record book. And I want to give him that opportunity. I think he'll have a chance to break the record in Folsom (Field)."

Not only will they go after the NCAA record but the all college record is 69 yards held by Ove Johansson of Abilene Christian.

It’s not a question of opportunity, Hawkins said he'd consider his team in field-goal range any time the Buffaloes cross midfield. It’s a question of what Crosby will do when the opportunity arises.

Crosby said he hit four 68-yarders in spring practice and misfired on a 70-yard attempt during the Buffaloes' spring game.

"It's pretty exciting and cool that he has that confidence in me already," Crosby said. "I think he's going to do it because he's talked about it so much."

UAB's Defense

There has been some talk of UAB’s defense stifling the Sooners running game and making Paul Thompson beat them.

If Ahmad Bradshaw, from Marshall, can break runs like this against UAB, I can’t wait to see what Adrian Peterson is going to do on Saturday night.

The Machine is up and Runnning

A new fan site for the Oklahoma Sooners launches today and you have got to check it out. It will be a site totally for the fans by the fans. If you are a fan of the Sooners or just a fan of college sports check out the Crimson and Cream Machine.

Interview with Steve Irvine

It’s finally game week for the Sooners and I’ll have you covered with as many opinions as you can handle in regards to Saturday’s game against the UAB Blazers. However, we also want to know what the Blazers are thinking as well, right? Steve Irvine of the Birmingham News was gracious enough to give us the low down on the Blazers as we approach game day.

Thanks for your time Steve!

My Opinion on Sports: We know about defensive end Larry McSwain and linebacker Orlandus King but who are some other play makers for the Blazers on each side of the ball?

Steve Irvine: Kevin Sanders is the team's best cover guy in the secondary and has had a strong fall camp. Jermaine McElveen, who plays the opposite end from McSwain, played hurt the past two years. When healthy, he may be as disruptive as McSwain.

On offense, UAB has three very good running backs in Corey White, Dan
Burks and Marculus Elliott. Wide receiver Norris Drinkard could also have a big year.

My Opinion on Sports: In their second scrimmage the Blazers ran the ball 70 times and only passed 39. Should we expect to see the Blazers try to pound the Sooners’ defense on the ground or do you think their offense will be more balanced?

Steve Irvine: UAB will definitely be a run-first team, which is much different than the past four years with Darrell Hackney at quarterback. With that being said, UAB will have to throw the ball against Oklahoma to keep things balanced.

My Opinion on Sports: If you are Blazers head coach Watson Brown, how do you game plan against the OU offensive attack?

Steve Irvine: Try to devise some way to keep Adrian Peterson from having a huge game. That's easier said than done. I would rather make Paul Thompson beat me than Adrian Peterson.

My Opinion on Sports: Coach Brown has a history at Oklahoma (offensive coordinator 93-94) and his brother coaches for the Sooners’ chief rival Texas Longhorns. In more ways than one is this more than just a non-conference game for him? Any chance he will talk with Mack for advice on beating the Sooners?

Steve Irvine: Chances are pretty good that the Brown brothers have discussed this game. Call it a hunch. As far as being more than a typical non-conference game, Watson loved his time at Oklahoma and he looks forward to seeing some old friends.

My Opinion on Sports: The Blazers played Tennessee to within a touchdown in last season’s opener in Knoxville. What do they need to do to stay in the game with the Sooners?

Steve Irvine: Run the ball successfully, minimize Peterson's success, avoid turnovers and pray a lot. Prayer may be the best option.

My Opinion on Sports: Give us your final score prediction.

Steve Irvine: Oklahoma 23, UAB 10

Thanks again Steve. However, I have to disagree with you on the final score. I think the Sooners will score more than 23.

You can read more of Steve’s work on the Birmingham News website.

Dolphins’ Defense Improving

Daunte looked solid (14-19-130) and Chris Chambers was dominant (7 receptions 67 yards and 1 td) but it was the Miami defense I wanted to check out on Thursday night.

After getting torched in their pre-season opener I wanted, no needed, to see improvement and I did. Miami held Carolina to just 9 first downs, 2-14 on third down, and just 145 net yards.

There were no long touchdown passes against Miami on Thursday night. In fact there were no touchdowns scored against the Defense. The Panthers only touchdown came on a Deangelo Williams 98 yard kick-off return.

Matt Roth, who stood out on the defense by disrupting several plays, registering four tackles and a sack, looks like he is going to be a stud and Big Daddy Dan Wilkinson is proving to be an exceptional addition.

In all, I was impressed with both the offensive and defensive performances.

Mariners Win – Stop the Presses

With the Mariners on an 11 game losing streak and football season just 10 days away this blog has turned mostly to football talk. However, last night the Mariners losing streak ended when Adrian Beltre launched a 9th inning homerun to beat the Yankees 6-5.

The 11 game streak put the Mariners out of the race for the AL West division but a win every now and then is still nice.

Where in the World is Sam Keller

Dismissed Arizona State quarterback Sam Keller was reported to have been enrolling at Nebraska as early as this week but his father has stated otherwise. Mike Keller told ESPN's Joe Schad on Tuesday evening that he has spoken with Cornhuskers coach Bill Callahan, informing him that some new teams had entered the equation.

"Nebraska is excited about Sam and anybody would be excited to have him as a leader," Mike Keller said. "Bill runs a pro style offense, some call it West Coast, and they'd love to have somebody with Sam's experience come in. He's mature and would be working with young quarterbacks for a season. You know, I'm not trying to play games or play schools against one another, but I can't say it's finalized yet."

Is it possible that we are looking at the 2007 OU quarterback?

Sooners Banned from Auto Dealership

You can bet that there will be no more scandals between the University of Oklahoma’s football players and the Norman auto dealership Big Red Sports and Imports. OU has banned its athletes from working at the dealership that inappropriately paid starting quarterback Rhett Bomar and his roommate J.D. Quinn resulting in their dismissal from the team.

The dealership is under new management, and the current owners cooperated with the university's investigation, according to an NCAA report released Tuesday.

In the report Stoops said that Bomar and Quinn "knowingly" broke the rules. It also stated that Oklahoma's compliance staff received "poor and inappropriate treatment" from the dealership's previous management.

In the report, the university said it compared athletes' time cards with class schedules, summer workouts, practice schedules and other time commitments and found no evidence that other athletes were "paid for working during practice or class times."

Sooner fans and Tech fans alike have to get over this one. It was a controversial finish to a great game. It doesn’t matter if he got in or not, Tech got the win and instead of finishing the season on a seven game winning streak the Sooners finished winning six of their last seven games.

Is he down before the ball crosses the goal line? Doesn’t really matter now but I say no touchdown.

Feldman's Take: Mountaineers Over Buckeyes

We officially know that it’s almost football season because ESPN’s Bruce Feldman has stopped by to talk some college football with us. You know sports opinions are more than welcome on this site but when you are a senior writer for ESPN The Magazine you get your photo and your own article to share yours.

Thanks for stopping by Bruce. I appreciate your time. Whenever you are ready to interview me for the magazine just let me know. I’ll be waiting here, patiently.

My Opinion on Sports: In your opinion who should be the pre-season number one team in the country and why? Who are your pre-season top 5 teams?

Bruce Feldman: I am leaning towards West Virginia. I like that unlike just about every other top 15 team they return pretty much all their key guys. They have a great o-line back, and their schedule is very conducive for making a title run (only a game at Louisville should be a major headache and there is no conference title game to survive.)

My Opinion on Sports: Do you think West Virginia has a legitimate shot to go to the BCS Championship game?

Bruce Feldman: Definitely. Rich Rodriguez is an outstanding coach and I think this program is really hungry and tough and they have enough athletes to make it happen. I am a little concerned about the depth, but everybody would be in some trouble if they lost their starting QB or starting TB.

My Opinion on Sports: Texas lost Vince Young and USC lost Leinart, Bush and White. Which of those two teams do you think will experience the most success in 06?

Bruce Feldman: I think both will be fine. I guess I have a bit more confidence in Texas at this point because I think even if their QB struggles, Jamaal Charles is a safer bet than the new RBs at USC.

My Opinion on Sports: From best to worst how would you rank the BSC Conferences going into this season?

Bruce Feldman: SEC…Big Ten.. ACC…Big 12/Pac-10 and then Big East

My Opinion on Sports: Before last season you accurately predicted that my Sooners were going to have a “down” year. What are your thoughts on the 06 Sooners and how do you see them finishing?

Bruce Feldman: I think they should be better even without Bomar. I like the defense and there are great young WRs for Thompson to work with. I am not sold on the O-line but I think Peterson is more than capable of helping them out.

The Sooners will go as far as Peterson can carry them, which I think will be to 9 wins. I do think the defense will be one of the 5 best in the country but the o-line is probably going to keep from them beating and overtaking Texas.

My Opinion on Sports: How is the Big 12 going to shape up?

Bruce Feldman: I think its Texas and then OU and everybody else. I lost some faith in A&M. I think the north is still a mess. I do think Nebraska will be the best of that bunch but I think after a fast start I think they'll tail off.

My Opinion on Sports: Give us your BCS Championship game prediction. Who plays and who wins?

Bruce Feldman: WVA over Ohio State. I think if Patrick White stays healthy, he’s going to be a big star.

There is a reason they call it Sooner magic. A player comes in and does something amazing to turn the tide of the game or snatch victory from the jaws of …well you know.

In 2002 OU was trailing Alabama 27-23 with less than three minutes left in the game when back-up running back Renaldo Works came in the game and placed in name in OU history with a little Sooner magic. This play set up Kejuan Jones’ go ahead touchdown on the very next play.

Sooners #10 in AP

The initial AP poll has released and the Oklahoma Sooners are number 10. I have to admit that I am pleasantly surprised. I ranked them 11 on my blog poll ballot and was worried that maybe I was too hopeful. Turns out I was pretty close!

I took my boys to meet the Sooners two weeks ago. It’s every kids dream to go play on the practice fields and meet the players, for whatever reason they are oblivious to the heat and long lines that make it every parent’s nightmare. Here are a few photos.

A little fun on the turf.

Reggie Smith Playing Both Sides

First it was the move from safety to corner. Now on top of his additional duties as kick and punt returner Smith will play receiver as well.

He’ll be the Sooner to play both sides of the ball since Andre Woolfolk did it in 2001. "Reggie is the kind of guy that you want on the field for his big play potential," Head Coach Bob Stoops said. "Now that he's at corner he has a little less responsibility in terms of reads and so forth so it frees him up to work on other things. He's a special athlete and it makes sense for us to have him out there as much as possible."

Smith played both offense and defense in high school as well. During his senior season he rushed 122 times for 935 yards while catching 47 passes for 607 yards. He scored 19 touchdowns that season, nine as a rusher, eight as a receiver and two on interception returns.

Blog Poll Round Table 1

The first blog poll is out and now it's time for the "round table" discussions amongst the voters.

This week's discussion is hosted by The House Rock Built. Feel free to add your comments as well.

1. What's the biggest ripoff in this preseason poll? Either pick a team that's offensively over or underrated, or you can rag on a particular voter's bad pick (hey, we're all adults here, we can handle it).

To me the biggest rip-off is that there isn’t a clear cut #1 team going into the season. I really think you could take Ohio State, Notre Dame, Texas, USC and West Virginia and make a legitimate defense as to why they could win the national championship and then turn around and make a legitimate argument as to why they are over-rated.

This isn’t going way out on a limb or anything but I’m saying that this year’s BCS championship game will not feature two undefeated teams.

2.What should a preseason poll measure? Specifically, should it be a predictor of end-of-season standing (meaning that a team's schedule should be taken into account when determining a ranking), or should it merely be a barometer of talent/hype/expectations?

In my opinion the pre-season poll should reflect where you think that individual team should be placed going into the season. In other words you think that on a neutral field team #1 would beat all the teams ranked beneath them.

3.What is your biggest stretch in your preseason ballot? That is to say, which team has the best chance of making you look like an idiot for overrating them?

West Virginia, I have them ranked # 5 and I seriously think they could be #1 while others believe they are a “flavor of the month” type pick.

The Mountaineers return more starters than Ohio State, Texas and USC. Last season’s leading rusher (Steve Slaton), receiver (Brandon Myles) and quarterback (Pat White). Their offensive line can dominate and their speed is incredible.

With their schedule any loss is unacceptable and would make me look foolish for how much I have touted them.

4.What do you see as the biggest flaw in the polling system (both wire service and blogpolling)? Is polling an integral part of the great game of college football, or is it an outdated system that needs to be replaced? If you say the latter, enlighten us with your new plan.

Playoff baby! Either four or eight teams use the polls to determine the order and then let them go after it. How do we know Texas couldn’t have beaten USC after the 04 season. What about 03 Auburn?

The problem with polls is bias. Everyone on the blog poll represents a team. I have Oklahoma (my team) ranked 11 on my ballot which is five spots higher than the poll at 16. Do I legitimately think they are five spots better than everyone else or are they just my favorite team?

The media polls have the same problems. Voters in the AP poll and the Harris poll have an agenda as well. They even gave a bunch of computer nerds who don't know a thing about the sport a say because they would be "unbiased" and yet even that was messed up.

5. You're Scott Bakula, and you have the opportunity to "Quantum Leap" back in time and change any single moment in your team's history. It can be a play on the field, a hiring decision, or your school's founders deciding to build the campus in Northern Indiana, of all godforsaken places. What do you do?

2003 Sugar Bowl – It’s late in the 4th quarter and the Sooners are driving. Tailback Kejuan Jones is running for four and five yards at a time. He gets Oklahoma all the way down to the LSU 11 yard line. The Tigers on the field are gassed, hands on their hips in between plays, and the Tigers in the stands are scared.

Everyone knew that if the Sooners punch it in here they are on their way to their 8th national championship. The Tigers’ fans sitting in my section were saying things like, “I can’t believe we are going to lose this game.”

Instead of continuing to pound away on the Tigers Oklahoma attempts four passes in a row without completing any of them. Jubilation for LSU fans and frustration for Oklahoma fans, in my “Quantum Leap” I’m going back and running the ball in on the Tigers.
