Dolphins Make AFC East A Tight Race

Miami needed a win in a bad way over the New York Jets and they got it! Coming into the game the Jets had a one game lead on the New England Patriots and two games on the Dolphins. Leaving Miami the Jets were tied with the Pats and just a game ahead of the Dolphins putting the defending AFC East Champions in striking distance.

Miami torched a Jets defense that was highly touted going into the game for 413 yards and 31 points. The Dolphins controlled the ball for 33 ½ minutes and converted nine of their fourteen third down attempts. “I used to see all those gimmicks when I was coaching back in college,” Jets Head Coach Rex Ryan said about Miami’s Wildcat offense. Well, he may have seen it but he sure couldn’t stop it!

Speaking of gimmicks, Ryan had to use two fake punts to keep two different scoring drives alive and had it not been for those and a very questionable pass interference call that put the Jets inside the 1 yard-line this game would have been very ugly.

Jason Taylor Is Coming Home

Joey Porter led the AFC in sacks last season with 17 ½ but the Dolphins got very little support for Porter in putting pressure on the quarterback. That’ll change in 2009 with the homecoming of All-Pro defensive end Jason Taylor. Taylor turned down an $8.5 million offer with the Redskins and resisted the courting from the New England Patriots to return to South Florida.

“My heart has always been in Miami, and so I’m truly excited to call myself a Dolphin once again,” Taylor said in a statement. “I was presented with a number of different opportunities, but in the end the combination of this being the best situation for my family, my love for this community and my tremendous loyalty to a great organization made this an easy decision.”

Taylor has been to six Pro Bowls as a Miami Dolphin and was the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2006. He only signed a one year deal and my guess is that he’s back for one more productive season and then bow out in retirement, giving him the type of going away from Miami that he deserves.

Miami Dolphins Go From Worst To First!

Happy days have returned again for the Miami Dolphins and their fans! A combination of new lifeblood instilled by first year coach Tony Sparano and a soft schedule left Miami with the opportunity to win the AFC East the final week of the season with a victory on the road at the New York Jets.

Even had Miami lost to Jets on Sunday as a fan I would not have been disappointed in the team. After seeing them go 1-15 last year I was just hoping to see them be competitive this year. The fact that they are entering the playoffs as a division champion is mind blowing to me because it was so far out of the realm of my expectations that I’m not even going to be disappointed if they lose to Baltimore this Sunday.

Now as Brett Favre ponders his future over the next several weeks it has become apparent that the real winner in Favre’s pre-season saga was Chad Pennington. The Jets clearly were done with Pennington and threw him away expecting Favre to lead them to greener pastures. A large part New York’s collapse rests on the shoulders of Favre who for whatever reason couldn’t resist throwing the ball to the other team the last five weeks of the season. Miami’s resurgence can certainly attributed to Pennington who provided stability and leadership to a position that has been lacking in Miami for a longtime. It would be a bit of a stretch to say that Pennington flourished in Miami but he did have a career year in passing yards (3,653) and finished the regular season with his highest quarterback rating (97.4) since 2002.

Miami finished the season by winning nine of their last ten games including the last five in a row with four of those being on the road. Now they’ll be home to face the Baltimore Ravens this Sunday in the first round of the playoffs. That is something we, as fans, haven’t seen since 2001. No matter how it ends on Sunday the Dolphins are winners in 2008.

Miami Dolphins Guaranteed A Winning Season

Fans of the Miami Dolphins have certainly paid their dues! After suffering through the last few years of Dave Wannstedt, then Nick Saban and on to the Cam Cameron debacle it has been a while since the Miami Dolphins and the word “playoffs” could be mentioned in the same breath unless it also included the words, “no chance!”

After enduring a brutal 1-15 season in 2007 many Miami fans went into 2008 with the “it really can’t get any worse and it won’t take much to get better than last year” mindset. After an 0-2 start things were looking just like 2007 with the Dolphins making stupid game costing mistakes against teams that they could have beaten. Then came week three where a ray of sunshine came shining through in the form of a 38-13 win over the defending AFC Champion, New England Patriots. A win over San Diego followed the next week and Miami had officially surpassed their win total from the 2007 football season.

Now the Dolphins have won 7 of their last 8 games and the defense hasn’t allowed a touchdown in 12 quarters of football. Sunday’s 14-9 win over San Francisco guaranteed that Miami would finish the season above .500. That accomplishment in itself should be enough but the division championship and a playoff birth are still up for grabs. So, when it comes to the playoffs the plan is simple for the Miami Dolphins. Win and you’re in!

Miami will close out the regular season with two road games. They are at Kansas City this coming Sunday and then face the New York Jets in what could be a division championship game.

Chiefs Missed Opportunity with Green

I wrote two weeks ago that Trent Green would be a Miami Dolphin by the end of that week. Well, obviously I was wrong but part of the reason why is because it seems that Kansas City team president Carl Peterson is about as stubborn as they come.

The Dolphins offered Kansas City a sixth round pick draft pick for Green over the weekend but Peterson balked at the offer keeping Green in a Chiefs uniform for right now.

I don’t see any scenario in which Green remains in Kansas City and now that the draft has come and gone I don’t see any way the Chiefs get anything for him. Kansas City already has a ton of money tied up in quarterbacks Damon Huard and Brody Croyle. They would owe even more to Green should he remain on the roster which would give them two quarterbacks getting “starting money.” The Chiefs would be fools to let that happen and now the only alternative is to cut him to avoid his salary.

Green had also already inked a deal with the Miami Dolphins that was contingent upon the trade going through but I’m sure can be adjusted to sign as a free agent. As to why Kansas City would turn down an offer for a guy they most likely are going to release anyway, I’m not the only one confused. You can throw Green’s agent Jim Steiner in the in the dazed and confused mix as well.

"At this point, I don't know what the Chiefs are going to get for him from the Dolphins. I don't know how they get anything," Steiner said on Sunday.

Ricky Williams to the St. Louis Rams?

The Miami Dolphins could finally be taking my advice, only about a year too late. After walking out on the team before the 2004 season Williams returned, and faced a four game suspension, for Miami’s 2005 season. It was at this point that I suggested that the Dolphins trade Williams for whatever they could get out of him.

Did they listen to me? Of course not! Williams hung around and received a one year ban from the league for yet another substance abuse violation. Essentially he walked out on his team for the second time in three seasons.

In Williams the Dolphins don’t just have damaged goods they have possibly permanently damaged goods. Williams is one failed drug test away from a life-time ban making him more of a liability than ever before.

Now, in steps Scott Linehan and the St. Louis Rams who could be willing to offer the Dolphins something for nothing. Linehan, who was Miami’s offensive coordinator in 2005, said that the Rams would be interested in acquiring Williams as a backup to Stephen Jackson.

The Rams probably wouldn’t be willing to offer anything better than a fifth or sixth round draft pick for him but at least the Dolphins can count on a draft pick!

Trent Green Will Be A Miami Dolphin!

A deal between the Miami Dolphins and the Kansas City Chiefs will happen this week that will send Trent Green to Miami in exchange for a 5th or 6th round draft pick. The two teams had a deal worked out earlier but the Chiefs pulled back in an attempt to try to get a better draft pick. The problem was lack of interest around the league for Green’s services and after the Detroit Lions pulled out of the Green sweepstakes last week both Miami and Kansas City became anxious to work out a deal before the draft.

The trade for Green will also end what has been a disappointing stint in Miami for Daunte Culpepper. Culpepper has been unhealthy since arriving in Miami but will gain huge interest from both the Oakland Raiders and the Cleveland Browns after being set free by the Dolphins.

Culpepper moving could also create ripples in the NFL Draft by causing Brady Quinn and JaMarcus Russel’s stock to drop and Adrian Peterson’s to rise.

Free Agent Casualties

The NFL Free Agency period has officially begun and several veterans were shown the door as teams are making salary cap room. Among the notable names released were Ravens RB Jamal Lewis, Vikings QB Brad Johnson, Saints WR Joe Horn and Cowboys QB Drew Bledsoe and Steelers LB Joey Porter.

As far as who and going where and what teams are looking for here’s the latest NFL rumors.

The Miami Dolphins are looking to add an outside linebacker and possibly pick up yet another veteran quarterback. Among the players the Dolphins would consider are the New England Patriots' Tully Banta-Cain, Cato June of the Indianapolis Colts and Carlos Polk of the San Diego Chargers.

The quarterback the Dolphins are interested in is Kansas City’s Trent Green who is rumored to be on the trading block. Miami will part ways with Joey Harrington and with Culpepper’s health still a big question mark Green could walk into the starting QB spot in Miami with little or no competition.

The hatred between Randy Moss and the Green Bay Packers could be subdued because the Packers are very interested in acquiring Moss from the Oakland Raiders.

The New York Giants are definitely going to be in the market for Bills cornerback Nate Clements.

The Detroit Lions picked up a new running back on Thursday when they traded cornerback Dre’ Bly to the Denver Broncos for Tatum Bell. Now offensive coordinator Mike Martz may go after one of his former receivers in St. Louis, Kevin Curtis.

Coaching Carousel not Over
For a short time last week all the vacant head coaching jobs in the NFL were filled. Then Bill Parcells decided to ride off into the sunset of retirement and he may not be the only one. Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy will spend some time contemplating his future after the Super Bowl. Dungy is 51 now and had stated in the past that he didn’t want to coach past the age of 50. If the Colts win it would provide an opportunity for Dungy to make a grand exit.

What are the Cowboys doing with Jason Garrett?
Jerry Jones is interviewing Miami Dolphins quarterbacks coach Jason Garrett but for what no one is really sure. The general thought is that he will be offered the offensive coordinator position but there are also rumors that he actually interviewed for the head coaching position. Whatever the reason for the interview a decision needs to be made quickly. The Dolphins have given Garrett a deadline of today for signing his contract extension with them.

Owens Happy

Here’s a shocker. Terrell Owens was happy to see Bill Parcells walk out the door. Owens said in an interview yesterday on ESPN radio that he felt that he was under used in the Cowboys offense and that he and Parcells would go weeks without talking. T.O. led the league in touchdown receptions and possibly could have been more utilized had he not also led the league in dropped passes.

Dolphins Find Their Man

(Disclaimer: I realize that this isn’t exactly breaking news to the rest of the world but it is to me because I’ve been out of the country for five days.)

Okay, I have to be honest. This one is going to have to grow on me. The Miami Dolphins have hired Cam Cameron as their new head coach. After all the interviews, 13 candidates, Cameron is who they settled for.

I’ve got nothing personal against this decision I’m just wondering why Miami couldn’t have done better. We are talking about 13 candidates here surely one of them had a winning record as a college head coach. Cameron was 18 – 37 at Indiana but then again it was Indiana.

Cameron is an offensive genius which is what Miami needs more than anything else at this point. Dom Capers will have the defense in great shape and Cameron proved in San Diego that he is capable of producing a high power offense but then again he did have LaDainian Tomlinson.

Time will tell if hiring Cameron was a good move of not for the Dolphins. I wish him the best and nothing but success in Miami. Could someone please tell me how many pennies I need to throw in the well for that wish to come true?

Hit of the Week
Kudos go out to Reggie Bush and the New Orleans Saints for reaching the NFC Championship Game but Bush paid the price to get there. After getting absolutely smoked by the Eagles’ Sheldon Brown Bush bounced back to rush for 52 yards and a touchdown.

You’ve Got to Be Kidding
All the names of the five finalists for the Miami Dolphins coaching job have been released and there is a shocker as well as a possible exception. The shocker is that former Alabama coach Mike Shula was not only interviewed but remains a candidate.

My initial thought was that he was interviewed as a favor to his dad who still has a lot of pull in the organization. Obviously the legend is endorsing is son but so is Dan Marino. Having two hall-of-famers in his corner is enough to make him a finalist.

While I have tons of respect for the Shula family and don’t think that Mike was given a fair shake at Alabama I don’t see him being the answer in Miami. However, I wouldn’t mind seeing him as the offensive coordinator.

The other four candidates are former Atlanta Falcons head coach Jim Mora, Georgia Tech coach Chan Gailey, Dolphins defensive coordinator Dom Capers and San Diego offensive coordinator Cam Cameron.

The exception is current San Diego Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer who could become an immediate candidate should he be fired by the Chargers. I say go ahead and interview him but do we really want a head coach who hasn’t won a play-off game in twenty years?

Should the Chargers let Schottenheimer go it would eliminate Cam Cameron as a Candidate as he would be the most likely choice for the Chargers. It also may be the reason why Marty's son, Brian, withdrew his name from the Dolphins.

Dolphins Heading Across the Pond in 07

The Miami Dolphins will make NFL history this year when they play as the home team in the NFL’s first regular season game outside of North America.

Wembley Stadium is the most likely place to host the game but Miami’s opponent is still undecided. The New York Giants and the Buffalo Bills are the two possible opponents for the Dolphins with the Giants possibly being the most coveted.

Honestly I don’t see how any good can come out of this. It robs the season ticket holders of a game. It robs the Dolphins of home field advantage and with all the travel involved it could cost Miami the following week unless it was followed up with their bye.

Over the next 16 seasons, each of the NFL’s 32 teams will participate in a regular season game outside the United States.

Coaching Search Narrowed Down
The Dolphins have also narrowed down the coaching search to five candidates and while we don’t know all five names a few of them did leak out.

Georgia Tech head coach Chan Gailey, former Atlanta Falcons head coach Jim Mora Jr. and New York Jets defensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer are all being brought back for a second interview.

Who knows who candidates number four and five are but one of them could be current Miami defensive coordinator Dom Capers who just signed a new three-year contract over the weekend.

Blogging the NFL – Divisional Play-Offs

Some way some how Tom Coughlin survived this season as the New York Giants head coach despite finishing the season 2-7. In fact the Giants gave Coughlin a one year extension through 2008. Is this an example of blind faith?

The Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly very close to hiring their next head coach. In fact rumors are flying that there will be an announcement as early as tomorrow. Longtime assistant Russ Grimm has been speculated to be the leading candidate.

Who hasn’t interviewed for the Miami Dolphins head coaching position? No one can deny that Miami has done one of the most extensive searches of the off season. The number of interviewed candidates is up to 12 and the most recent big name to come up is Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Mike Martz.

The plan is to narrow the list down to five and then two before making an offer to anyone.

The Arizona Cardinals appear to be focusing in on Houston Texans assistant head coach Mike Sherman. They are bringing the former Packers head coach in for his second interview but are also supposedly waiting to see what the Pittsburgh Steelers do with Russ Grimm and Ken Whisenhunt. I wouldn’t eliminate Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Norm Chow from the equation yet either.

The Oakland Raiders are rumored to be interested in former offensive coordinator Marc Trestman.

Browns Moving to the West Coast?
Offensively speaking of course. Cleveland is hot on the trail of former Atkanta Falcons offensive coordinator Greg Knapp who is a West Coast offensive guy.

Harrison Out Again for Pats
The New England Patriots will be out Rodney Harrison again this weekend when they travel to play against the San Diego Chargers. This will be the second consecutive play-off game the Patriots safety will miss with a sprained knee. At this point Harrison is looking like a very bad investment for New England.

Seattle has Jackson Back
Seattle will need to use every offensive weapon in their arsenal to upset the Chicago Bears and it appears they are close to getting there. Leading receiver Darrell Jackson has been upgraded to questionable for Sunday’s game.

Not Buying the Pete Carroll Rumor

To this point the Dolphins have interviewed Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera, Bears offensive coordinator Ron Turner, former Falcons coach Jim Mora, Georgia Tech coach Chan Gailey, Pittsburgh offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt and San Diego offensive coordinator Cam Cameron, whom they talked to Sunday.

However the most notable interview was conducted in Costa Rica over the weekend when Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga flew down to interview vacationing USC head coach Pete Carroll. I guess you don’t fly to Costa Rica if you are not really interested and you don’t give up vacation time if you don’t want to listen.

Carroll has done an outstanding job at USC but the thing that scares me as a Dolphins fan is that he has already coached in the NFL and in fact the AFC East. Carroll was a failure as the head coach of the New York Jets and the New England Patriots and for that reason I don’t see him leaving L.A. He’s a smart enough guy to know a good thing when he has it.

Please No!

The last thing the Miami Dolphins need is another re-tread head coach. It turns out that the Dolphins have asked for and have received permission to talk with Georgia Tech head coach Chan Gailey.

Gailey was the Dolphins offensive coordinator during the 2000 and 2001 seasons. Miami went 11-5 both seasons with a division title and a 1-2 play-off record over that time span. He also coordinated the Pittsburgh Steelers offense in 1996 and 97. During those two years the Steelers went 21-11 with an AFC Championship appearance in 97.

Play-offs, division titles, conference championship games all sound great and make Gailey look like an impressive candidate except for one other stop on his NFL resume, the Dallas Cowboys. Gailey went 18-14 in two seasons as the Cowboys head coach and seemed to be losing control of his team giving credence to the theory that some guys can be great coordinators and bad head coaches.

Gailey is not the man for Miami. 2006 was the first time he won more than 7 games at Georgia Tech in the five seasons he has coached there. He has a losing bowl record as a college head coach and a losing play-off record as an NFL head coach.

We’ve already seen how this one ends. In my opinion the Dolphins need to pass on this one.

Is This the Next Head Coach of the Miami Dolphins?

I say it’s a long shot but Bill Cower will officially resign or “retire” from the Pittsburg Steelers later today. Both Miami offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey and assistant head coach Dom Capers have served on Cower’s staff before.

Also keep in mind that the Miami Dolphins have deep pockets and are out to find the best possible candidate for the job. I hate this term but they really do need to hit a “home run” with their next hire after the Nick Saban debacle and yes it was a debacle.
