Perhaps Fontana Will Teach Us Something About NASCAR `09

There are a total of 36 races in the 2009 NASCAR season and with the sports premier event done with we’ve learned absolutely nothing about this season. Matt Kenseth found himself in victory lane after the Daytona and he could be the least talked about winner in a while. Instead the media and blogs were focused on Junior’s wiping out of 9 drivers in one blow and the subsequent rain delay that awarded Kenseth the winner.

Now the circuit moves west to Fontana, California for the Auto Club 500 and barring another controversial pile up followed by an act of God perhaps we’ll get a real gage on the season. With all due respect is anyone buying that Kenseth is the top driver after last weekend’s race? For that matter is Kurt Bush the 11th or Jimmie Johnson the 31st? We just don’t know yet!

NASCAR Fan, Are You Out There?

They say that NASCAR is America’s fastest growing sport and while I have tried my absolute best to get into it, I can’t get my interest to move beyond just watching the wrecks on ESPN’s Sports Center.

Trust me, its not for lack of effort that I haven’t gotten into it. I really tried at the beginning of last season to follow it and even make a blog post or two about it. However, when baseball picked up my quest to discover the difference between the Nextel cup series and the Busch series came to a screeching halt.

Here’s the deal. I’m willing to give it another shot this season but not without help. I understand that Matt Kenseth won the Auto Club 500 at California this weekend and his teammates Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson finished second and third. What I don’t understand is how that turns into points in the race for the cup and if all three are teammates why is Kenseth driving a ford and Gordon and Johnson Chevy’s?

So tell me, two races into the season is there any hope for a guy like me or should I just stick to spring training for baseball and the upcoming NFL draft? I’m laying myself at your mercy NASCAR fan. I’m willing to learn if you are willing to teach.

Thanks to all of you who have sent me e-mails in an effort to educate me in the ways of NASCAR. I really have learned a lot (like Kenseth, Gordon and Johnson aren't really all three teammates) and it got me wondering if maybe we should start another blog specifically for NASCAR. It could be very educational if we got the right person to write for it.

A Turn For the Worse

I often make fun of NASCAR because, let’s face it, they really do just drive fast and turn left. A right turn here or there could detrimental to these guys if they are in a race car, go cart, bicycle or in Jimmie Johnson’s case, a golf cart. The Nextel Cup champion suffered a broken wrist when he was tossed from a golf cart at a charity golf tournament over the weekend.

"I was in a golf cart and the driver took a sharp turn," Johnson said in a team press release. "I wasn't holding on tight enough, landed awkwardly on the ground and heard a little pop.”

What kind “sharp turn” would catch a NASCAR champion off guard? Possibly a right turn, they are the devil to the men of the track. Just imagine the carnage that would result from throwing in a right turn in on these guys at Daytona?
